Door Compatibility Guide

Our entrance handles are designed to work with a wide range of door types. Use this guide to confirm compatibility before ordering, or email sales@entrancehandles.co.nz with your door specifications for personalised advice. Every fixing centre, clearance and overall length for the 316 stainless range is in our pull handle specification sheet (PDF).

Timber Doors

Compatibility: All handle styles

Our handles are ideal for solid timber entrance doors. Our 316 stainless handles suit timber 32mm to 70mm thick, and the standard through-bolt fixings are included. For a door outside that range, contact us for custom-length bolts. Our brass and bronze handles are made by us in New Zealand. They suit doors 25 mm to 40 mm thick on the standard 70 mm screws, and we can supply 80 mm screws for doors to 50 mm or 90 mm screws for doors to 60 mm. On glass we use 45 mm screws, for panels 3 mm to 15 mm thick. Tell us your door thickness when you order and we cut the screws to suit.

Aluminium Doors

Compatibility: All handle styles and smart locks

All handles work with standard aluminium entrance doors. Our 316 stainless handles suit aluminium 32mm to 70mm thick, and the included through-bolt fixings suit most aluminium frame profiles. Check your frame width to ensure the handle length suits your door proportions.

  • Standard aluminium frames - fully compatible
  • Narrow stile aluminium - compatible (check frame width for handle length)
  • Commercial aluminium - fully compatible

Glass Doors

Compatibility: Most handle styles (professional installation recommended)

Our 316 stainless handles suit glass doors 10mm to 15mm thick. Nylon spacers and washers for glass are included with the handle. Glass cannot be drilled on site. It is drilled before it is toughened, so the panel has to be supplied cut to size and drilled by your glass manufacturer. Confirm the hole positions and the glass thickness with them before the panel is made. Our brass and bronze handles suit glass 3 mm to 15 mm thick. We recommend professional installation for glass doors.

  • 316 stainless handles: tempered or laminated glass 10 mm to 15 mm, pre-drilled
  • Brass and bronze handles: glass 3 mm to 15 mm, pre-drilled, fixed with 45 mm screws
  • Glass outside those ranges: not suitable
  • Double-glazed units: not recommended for through-bolt mounting

uPVC / PVC Doors

Compatibility: ask us first

uPVC doors typically have their own integrated handle systems. The 316 stainless range is specified for timber, aluminium and glass doors only, and we hold no fixing specification for uPVC. Email us a photo of the door and its thickness and we will tell you whether it can be done.

Accessibility

Our 316 stainless pull handles are compliant to AS 1428.1-2009 Design for Access and Mobility. If you are specifying for a commercial or public entrance, quote that standard and the handle model on your schedule. This applies to the 316 stainless range. Our brass and bronze handles are made by us in New Zealand. The Round Tubular, Straight Square and Square T-Bar share the same fixing centres as their stainless counterparts; the others have their own, published on each product page. We hold no accessibility compliance statement for the brass and bronze range.

Handle Mounting Configurations

Back-to-Back (Pairs)

Two handles mounted on opposite sides of the door, connected through the door with bolts. This is the most common configuration for entrance doors. All our handles are available in back-to-back pairs.

Single-Sided

One handle on the outside of the door only. Suitable when the inside has a different handle or lock mechanism. All styles available as single-sided.

Smart Locks & Electric Handles

Our smart locks and electric handles are compatible with the same door types as our pull handles. They are designed to be paired with our pull handle range for a complete entrance solution. When bundling a handle and smart lock, both mount independently. No special prep is required beyond standard lock and handle cutouts.

Measuring Your Door

Before ordering, measure:

  1. Door thickness - our 316 stainless handles suit timber and aluminium 32mm to 70mm, and glass 10mm to 15mm. Measure the door leaf, not the frame
  2. Door height - helps determine the right handle length for visual proportion
  3. Existing hole positions - if replacing existing handles, measure centre-to-centre distance of existing holes

Recommended Handle Lengths

  • Standard single door (820mm wide): 400-600mm handle
  • Wide entrance door (1000mm+): 600-800mm handle
  • Double doors: 600-1000mm handles (one per leaf)
  • Pivot doors: 800-1000mm handles for visual impact
